The Watchmen Find the Bride - Song of Songs 5:7

In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the groom invited the bride to come away with him, and the bride said, “I rose up to open to my beloved; and my hands dropped with myrrh, and my fingers with sweet smelling myrrh, upon the handles of the lock. I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spoke: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer”, and in chapter five and verse seven of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said, the watchmen that went about the city found mewhere we read,

The watchmen that went about the city found me, they smote me, they wounded me;

the keepers of the walls took away my veil from me.

The verse begins, The watchmen that went about the city found me, they smote me, they wounded me; Solomon began with the words, “the watchmen” or “the guards, keepers, observers and protectors” “that went about the city” which means “who walked or marched around the place of waking, encampment or town” “found me” or “attained, met, secured and encountered me, the bride”, “they smote me” which means “they, the watchmen, struck, hit, beat and attacked me, the bride”, “they wounded me” or “they, the watchmen, split and bruised me, the bride”. Solomon shared how the bride said the guards or protectors who walked around the town discovered and encountered her, struck her and bruised her.

The verse continues, the keepers of the walls took away my veil from me. Solomon added the words, “the keepers of the walls” or “the guards, observers and protectors pertaining to the protective constructs” “took away my veil from me” which means “lifted and carried apart my, the bride's, covering spread or expanded wrapper separate and apart from me, the bride”. Solomon shared how the guards of the town also carried away her covering veil from her.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon curing the time the bride searched for the groom, she encountered the guards and keepers of the town, and they beat and bruised her and removed her covering veil. This may seem a little extreme from our perspective, however, we should keep in mind she was experiencing this because she refused the invitation to go away with the groom. Sometimes God will allow the striking and bruising of the world and the “keepers” within it to drive us to Him, and because He loves us, He sent His Son Jesus to be beat, stricken, bruised and wounded on our behalf. (See Isaiah 53:5) When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and heal the wounds within our bodies and souls so we continually stay in fellowship with Him.

Next time Solomon shares how the bride says, I am sick of love so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
