In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said, “my beloved is white and ruddy, the chief among ten thousand. His head is as the most fine gold, his locks are bushy, and black as a raven. His eyes are as the eyes of doves by the rivers of waters, washed with milk, and fitly set. His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers: his lips like lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh. His hands are as gold rings set with the beryl: his belly is as bright ivory overlaid with sapphires”, and in chapter five and verse fifteen of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said, “his legs are as pillars of marble” where we read,
His legs are as pillars of marble, set upon sockets of fine gold:
his countenance is as Lebanon, excellent as the cedars.
The verse begins, “His legs are as pillars of marble, set upon sockets of fine gold:” Solomon began with the words, “his legs” or “his, the groom's, thighs and upper physical legs” “are as pillars of marble” which means “exist similar and in likeness to upright columns of bleached white, byssus, alabaster and silk marble stone”, “set upon sockets” or “established, ordained, founded and lain on bases, pedestals and foundations” “of fine gold” which means “pertaining to refined and pure gold metal”. Solomon shared how the bride said the upper legs and thighs of the groom exist like upright columns of “marble” stone which were established on pedestals of pure and refined gold metal.
The verse continues, “his countenance is as Lebanon, excellent as the cedars.” Solomon continued with the words, “his countenance” or “his, the groom's, appearance, sight and goodly form” “is as Lebanon” which means “exists similar and in likeness to Lebanon whose name means whiteness and was a wooded mountain range on the northern border of Israel”, “excellent as the cedars” or “choice, elect and acceptable similar to timbers and trees of cedar wood”. Solomon shared how the bride spoke of the groom's face and appearance as being similar to the wooded mountain range known as“Lebanon”, and he was choice and acceptable as the “trees of cedar” which were located there.
When we consider Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how the bride continued to share about the groom's attributes. His “upper legs” were similar to upright columns made with “marble” stone which stood upon pedestals of pure refined gold metal, and his appearance was like the mountain range of “Lebanon” which was filled with “trees of cedar”. The bride was captured by the physique of the groom, and his face was not only renown, but also attractive to her. God desires to have an intimate personal relationship like this with us through His Son Jesus, and when we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and reveal His beauty to us through His Holy Spirit as we come to know Him more and more.
Next time Solomon shares how the bride says, “his mouth is most sweet” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
