Many Waters Cannot Quench Love - Song of Songs 8:7

In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said to the groom, “set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which has a most vehement flame”, and in chapter eight and verse seven of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said to the groom “many waters cannot quench love” where we read,

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it:

if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.

The verse reads, Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: Solomon began with the words, “many waters” or “an abundant, numerous and multitude of rushing streams or floods of water” “cannot quench love” which means “are unable and incapable of extinguishing and putting out strong and mighty affection and passion”, “neither can the floods” or “no and not in any way are the streams and rivers” “drown it” which means “overflow, engulf or sweep it, love, away”. Solomon shared how the bride knew mighty waters were unable to extinguish the passion of love and rushing streams could not engulf it.

The verse continues, “if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.” Solomon added the words, “if a man” or “whether and in case a male human being” “would give all the substance of his house” which means “was able to bestow each, every and the whole of his wealth, riches and sufficiency within his home, dwelling place, habitation and abode” “for love” or “on behalf of passion, emotion and affection”, “it would utterly be contemned” which means “giving all the substance of his house for love would be despised, held in contempt and insignificant”. Solomon shared how the bride said whether a person could give away everything within their home to purchase “love”, their offer would absolutely scorned and ignored.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the bride understood the intense passion and value of “love”. Nothing could extinguish it, and there was no price that could be paid to obtain it. God's love is like that. He “so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (See John 3:16) Jesus came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us an valuable and unquenchable love for Him and others that shall last for all eternity.

Next time Solomon shares how the bride and groom or the bride's brothers say, “we have a little sister so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
