Solomon's Vineyard - Song of Songs 8:11

In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said, “I am a wall, and my breasts like towers: then was I in his eyes as one that found favor”, and in chapter eight and verse eleven of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said, “Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon” where we read,

Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers;

every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver.

The verse reads, Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; Solomon began with the word, “Solomon” whose name means “peace” and was son of David by Bathsheba and the third king of Israel “had a vineyard” which means “owned and possessed a garden or field of vines” “at Baalhamon” whose name means “lord or possessor of abundance”; “he let out the vineyard” which means “he, Solomon, lent, ascribed, committed, leased and entrusted the garden or field of vines” “unto keepers” or “to guards, reservers or tenant farmers”. Solomon shared how the bride took note of the garden of vines possessed by “Solomon” in a location known as “Baalhamon”, and Solomon leased the “vineyard” out to tenant farmers.

The verse continues, “every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver.” Solomon added the words, “every one for the fruit thereof” or “each, all and the whole of the tenant farmers who were rewarded by the produce and bough of the field” “was to bring a thousand pieces of silver” which means “were to come, carry forth and take one thousand silver shekels or talents” to Solomon as payment. Solomon shared how the bride said each of the tenant farmers who leased and reaped from Solomon's fields were to take him one thousand silver shekels or talents as payment for the field.

When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how the bride made mention of the “vineyard” owned by “Solomon”. He leased the property to farmers who would reap from the fruit that was grown there. They were to pay Solomon one thousand silver pieces for their lease, and we shall see how this relates to the bride in our next verse. For now let us consider, “the earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof, the world, and they that dwell therein” (See Psalm 24:1), and in fact, God owns everything. We are given the privilege to live in God's world, and because He loves us, He desires to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the value of reaping from His “vineyard” and returning to Him what is rightfully His own.

Next time Solomon shares how the bride says, “my vineyard, which is mine, is before me so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
