The book of Zechariah was written to the people of Israel who forsook building the temple of Jehovah God after they returned from being captives in Babylon for seventy years, and Zechariah wrote, “In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying, the LORD has been sore displeased with your fathers”, and in chapter one and verse three of Zechariah, Zechariah said,“turn to me, says the LORD of hosts" where we read,
Therefore say you unto them, Thus says the LORD of hosts; Turn you unto me, says the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, says the LORD of hosts.
The verse reads, “Therefore say you unto them, Thus says the LORD of hosts; Turn you unto me, says the LORD of hosts,...”. Zechariah began with the words, “therefore say you unto them” or “wherefore, then and this being so, utter, declare and proclaim you, Zechariah, to them, the people of Israel”, “thus says the LORD of hosts” which means “the following utters, declares and proclaims Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God who is over the spiritual army of angels and warriors”; “turn you unto me” or “come back and return you people of Israel to me, Jehovah God”, “says the LORD of hosts” which means “utters, declares and proclaims Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God who is over the spiritual army of angels and warriors”. Zechariah shared how Jehovah God of the spiritual angels and warriors instructed the people of Israel to return to Him.
The verse continues, “... and I will turn unto you, says the LORD of hosts.” Zechariah added the words, “and I will turn unto you” or “and I, Jehovah God, shall come back and return to you, people of Israel”, “says the LORD” which means “utters, declares and proclaims Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “of hosts” or “who is over the spiritual army of angels and warriors”. Zechariah shared how Jehovah God who is over the angel army said if the people of Israel would return to Him, He would come back to them.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how Jehovah God wanted the people of Israel to return to Him, and He gave this promise, if they would return to Him, He would return to them. God gives an invitation to every person to be in a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of the world. When we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us close to Him as we draw near to Him every day. (See James 4:8) Three times in this verse along, Zechariah mentioned “the LORD of hosts”, and this same God desires to have fellowship with us.
Next time Zechariah says, “turn you now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
