In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said, “my beloved is white and ruddy, the chief among ten thousand. His head is as the most fine gold, his locks are bushy, and black as a raven”, and in chapter five and verse twelve of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said, “his eyes are as the eyes of doves” where we read,
His eyes are as the eyes of doves by the rivers of waters,
washed with milk, and fitly set.
The verse begins, “His eyes are as the eyes of doves by the rivers of waters, ...” Solomon began with the words, “his eyes” or “his, the groom's, physical eyes” “are as the eyes of doves” which means “exist similar and in likeness to the physical eyes of a pigeon or dove bird” “by the rivers of waters” or “beside and next to the channels or streams of watercourses or floods”. Solomon shared how the bride said her well-loved groom's physical eyes were similar to a “dove's eyes” which were beside flowing channels or streams of watercourses.
The verse goes on to say, “... washed with milk, and fitly set.” Solomon continues with the words, “washed with milk” or “laved or bathed by the use of the richness of a kine”, “and fitly set” which means “and fully and perfectly placed within a plumb socket”. Solomon shared how the bride said the groom's “eyes” appeared as though they were bathed with the richness of a kine and established within their sockets in a perfect manner.
When we consider Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how Solomon continued to share the bride's description of the groom. She said his physical “eyes” were similar to an inviting “dove's eyes” that was beside a flowing stream or watercourse, and they were similar to whitened jewels which were perfectly placed within the sockets. The bride was enamored with the groom, and we can imagine how she loved the way he looked at her. This is a description of an intimate relationship, and it becomes a great example of how we are to be toward our “groom” Jesus Christ. God loves us, and He wants us to love Him in return. (See 1 John 4:9-10) He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a loving intimacy for Him like He has for us.
Next time Solomon shares how the bride says, “his cheeks are as a bed of spices” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
