I Have Put Off My Coat - Song of Songs 5:3

In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the groom said, “I am come into my garden, my sister, my spouse: I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends; drink, yes, drink abundantly, O beloved”, and the bride responded, “I sleep, but my heart wakes: it is the voice of my beloved that knocks, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night, and in chapter five and verse three of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said, I have put off my coat where we read,

I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I defile them?

The verse begins, I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? Solomon began with the words, “I have put off my coat” or “I, the bride, have removed my, the bride's, tunic or outer garment”; “how shall I put it on” which means “in what way will I, the bride, be clothed with the coat again”? Solomon shared how the bride gave the excuse that she had removed her outer garment, so she could not respond to the groom's knock.

The verse continues, I have washed my feet; how shall I defile them? Solomon added the words, “I have washed my feet” or “I, the bride, have bathed my, the bride's, physical feet of the body”; “how shall I defile them” which means “in what way will I soil them, the bride's feet”? Solomon shared how the bride also included that she had just bathed her“feet”, and she questioned for what reason she should get them dirty again.

When we consider Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how the bride gave more excuses for not responding to the groom. She had just taken off her outer garment and bathed her “feet”. Even though He wanted to be with her, she gave priority to other things. God wants to be with us, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, He gave an invitation to us to receive Him and spend time with Him. When we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us ample opportunity to be intimate with Him. We must be careful about making excuses and having other activities distract us from being with Him, and in order to enjoy fellowship with God, we should ask Him to keep our minds attuned and responding when He knocks.

Next time Solomon shares how the bride says, my beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
