Threescore Queens and Fourscore Concubines - Song of Songs 6:8

In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the groom said to the bride, “your hair is as a flock of goats that appear from Gilead. Your teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing, whereof every one bears twins, and there is not one barren among them. As a piece of a pomegranate are your temples within your locks”, and in chapter six and verse eight of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the groom referred to, threescore queens, and fourscore concubines where we read,

There are threescore queens, and fourscore concubines, and virgins without number.

The verse begins, There are threescore queens, and fourscore concubines, ... Solomon began with the words, “there are threescore queens” or “there exists sixty female royal rulers and leaders”, “and fourscore concubines” which means “and eighty paramours, doxies or lovers”. Solomon shared how the groom referred to sixty female royal rulers and eighty lovers.

The verse goes on to say, ... and virgins without number. Solomon continued with the words, “and virgins” or “and young marriageable women” “without number” which means “countless and innumerable”. Solomon shared how the groom referred to the innumerable number of young marriageable women.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the groom referred to other women who were available which were composed of sixty “queens”, eighty “concubines” and “virgins”. The idea was that his bride exceeded them all. God wants us to know He loves us and we are special to Him. We shall see how the groom validates the bride in our next verses, however, for now, let us realize how much God cares for us. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us an understanding of how valuable we are to Him. (See John 3:16-21)

Next time Solomon shares how the groom says, my dove, my undefiled is but one so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
