Lips, Speech and Temples - Song of Songs 4:3

In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the groom said to the bride, “Behold, you are fair, my love; behold, you are fair; you have doves' eyes within your locks: your hair is as a flock of goats, that appear from mount Gilead. Your teeth are like a flock of sheep that are even shorn, which came up from the washing; whereof every one bear twins, and none is barren among them”, and in chapter four and verse three of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the groom spoke about the bride's, “lips, speech and temples” where we read,

Your lips are like a thread of scarlet, and your speech is comely:

your temples are like a piece of a pomegranate within your locks.

The verse begins, “Your lips are like a thread of scarlet, and your speech is comely: Solomon began with the words, “your lips” or “your, the bride's, brim and edge of the mouth used for speaking” “are like a thread of scarlet” which means “exist similar and in likeness to a cord, line or string with a crimson colored dye”, “and your speech” or “and your, the bride's, mouth used for uttering, declaring, proclaiming and speaking” “is comely” which means “exists as seemly and beautiful”. Solomon shared how the groom told his bride that her “lips” were similar to a crimson thread, and her mouth used for speaking was beautiful.

The verse continues, your temples are like a piece of a pomegranate within your locks. Solomon added the words, “your temples” or “your, the bride's, cheeks or temples on the side of the head” “are like a piece of a pomegranate” which means “exist similar and in likeness to a cleavage, mill-stone, slice or part cut off a tree that bears pomegranate shaped ornaments” “within your locks” or “in your, the bride's, veil”. Solomon shared how the groom viewed his bride's temples or cheeks similar to a half or a slice of a pomegranate fruit inside her veil.

When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how the groom continued to shower his bride with loving intimacies as he spoke of her crimson colored “lips” and her beautiful inviting mouth. He spoke of her lovely cheeks or temples which were similar to a section of a pomegranate fruit behind the veil she was wearing. This is a picture of love and fondness of the groom for his bride, and when we consider the Holy Spirit of God inspired all the scriptures, this becomes an allegory of God's intimate love for us. God proved His love toward us by sending His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us an understanding of His wonderful attraction to us.

Next time Solomon shares how the groom says to the bride, “your neck is like the tower of David built for an armory, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
