Who is Coming from the Wilderness? - Song of Songs 8:5

In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride declared, “I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that you stir not up, nor awake my love, until he please”, and in chapter eight and verse five of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how a relative asked, “who is this that comes up from the wilderness?” where we read,

Who is this that comes up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved?

I raised you up under the apple tree: there your mother brought you forth: there she brought you forth that bare you.

The verse reads, Who is this that comes up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? Solomon began with the words, “who is this” or “what person is the person” “that comes up” which means “who rises, shoots forth and ascends” “from the wilderness” or “separate and apart from the uninhabited land, open field or desert location”, “leaning upon her beloved” which means “supported and reclining on her, the bride's, well-loved groom”? Solomon shared how a relative of the bride asked who the person was that was reclining upon her well-loved groom.

The verse continues, “I raised you up under the apple tree: there your mother brought you forth: there she brought you forth that bare you.” Solomon added the words, “I raised you up” or “I, the relative, awakened, roused, incited and stirred you, the bride” “under the apple tree” which means “beneath the tree that bears apples”: “there your mother” or “in that place and location your, the bride's, immediate female ancestor and progenitor” “brought you forth” which means “was in travail and birthed you, the bride”: “there she brought you forth” or “in that place and location she, the bride's mother, travailed and birthed you, the bride” “that bare you” which means “that engendered, beget and delivered you, the bride”. Solomon shared how the relative spoke of awakening the bride beneath a tree that bears apples where her female progenitor birthed, engendered and begot her.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how a relative was brought into this love story as they wondered who the person was that ascended from the desert place while reclining upon her well-loved groom. This relative recalled when the bride was awakened beneath an “apple tree” where her mother in travail birthed and engendered her. This relative knew the bride's history, however, the bride was living in the present time and she was hanging on to her groom. We recall how the groom invited the bride to go with him, but she gave excuses for not taking advantage of the opportunity. This time she was with him, and she was clinging to him as they walked together. This is type of intimate personal relationship God desires with us, and He gave His Son Jesus to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind to make that possible. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a desire to cling to Him all our days of our life on earth and into Heaven someday with Him.

Next time Solomon shares how the bride says to the groom, “set me as a seal upon your heart so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
