Turn Away Your Eyes - Song of Songs 6:5

In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the groom said, “you are beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah, comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army with banners”, and in chapter six and verse five of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the groom said, turn away your eyes from me where we read,

Turn away your eyes from me, for they have overcome me:

your hair is as a flock of goats that appear from Gilead.

The verse begins, Turn away your eyes from me, for they have overcome me: Solomon began with the words, “turn away your eyes from me” or “cause your, the bride's, physical eyes, to be separated and parted from me, the groom”, “for they have overcome me” which means “because, since and on account that they, the bride's eyes, have boisterously and stormily disturbed me, the groom”. Solomon shared how the groom instructed the bride to cause her “eyes” not to look at him because they had boisterously disturbed him.

The verse continues, your hair is as a flock of goats that appear from Gilead. Solomon added the words, “your hair”or “your, the bride's, hair upon her head” “is as a flock of goats” which means “exists similar and in likeness to a herd or drove of goat animals” “that appear from Gilead” or “which are winding down the slopes of Gilead whose name means rocky region and was a mountainous region bounded on the west by the Jordan, on the north by Bashan, on the east by the Arabian plateau, and on the south by Moab and Ammon; sometimes called 'Mount Gilead' or the 'land of Gilead' or just 'Gilead'”. Solomon shared how the groom complemented the “hair” on the bride's head as he described it similar to a herd of “goat animals” which wind down the mountainside of “Gilead”.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the groom was mesmerized by the “eyes” of the bride because they passionately disturbed him. The groom repeated the idea of the bride's “hair” being wavy like a herd of “goats” that were winding down the mountainside of “Gilead”. (See Song of Songs 4:1) Needless to say, the groom greatly admired and was transfixed by the bride. God loves us like this. He wants to be in a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who was sent into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and reveal to us over and over again just how much He loves us.

Next time Solomon shares how the groom says, your teeth are as a flock of sheep so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
