In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said “I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine: he feeds among the lilies”, and in chapter six and verse four of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the groom said, “you are beautiful, O my love” where we read,
You are beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah, comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army with banners.
The verse begins, “You are beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah, ...” Solomon began with the words, “you are beautiful” or “you, the bride, exist as comely, fair and goodly”, “O my love” which means “O my, the groom's, well-loved bride”, “as Tirzah” or “similar and in likeness to Tirzah whose name means favorable and was one of the five daughters of Zelophehad the son of Hepher of the tribe of Manasseh and a Canaanite city which was later the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel”. Solomon shared how the groom declared the bride to be as comely and fair as one of the daughters of Zelophehad and the Canaanite city which was the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel.
The verse goes on to say, “... comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army with banners.” Solomon continued with the words, “comely as Jerusalem” or “beautiful, fair and seemly like Jerusalem whose name means teaching of peace and is the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split”, “terrible as an army” which means “awe-inspiring like a host of soldiers” “with banners” or “accompanied by conspicuous flags”. Solomon shared how the groom said the bride was as beautiful as the city of “Jerusalem” and as awesome a a host of soldiers who were accompanied by attention-getting flags.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the groom greatly admired the beauty of his bride, and the same is true for Jesus Christ for His bride, the church. Jesus gave His life on the cross to die for the sins of all mankind, and when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life, allow us to become part of his church and give us a beauty that excels “Tirzah, Jerusalem and an awesome army”.
Next time Solomon shares how the groom says, “turn away your eyes from me” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
