In the book of Hosea, Hosea said, “O Israel, return unto the LORD your God; for you have fallen by your iniquity. Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips”, and in chapter fourteen and verse three of Hosea, Hosea said, “Asshur shall not save us” where we read,
Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses:
neither will we say any more to the work of our hands,
You are our gods: for in you the fatherless finds mercy.
The verse begins, “Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses:” Hosea began with the word, “Asshur shall not save us” or “Asshur whose name means a step and was the name for the people of Assyria will in no way or manner rescue, deliver and liberate us, the people of Israel”; “we will not ride” which means “we, the people of Israel, shall in no way or manner sit or mount” “upon horses” or “on swift chariot horses”. Hosea shared how “Asshur” or the country of “Assyria” would not be able to deliver the people of “Israel”, and they would in no way mount up upon “horses”.
The verse continues, “neither will we say any more to the work of our hands,” Hosea added the words, “neither will we say any more” or “no and not in any way shall we, the people of Israel utter, declare and proclaim any longer or again” “to the work” which means “to the deeds, business, acts and undertakings” “of our hands” or “belonging to our, the people of Israel's, physical hands of power, might and ability” the following words. Hosea said the people of “Israel”would no longer declare that the acts and deeds of their physical hands was according to the following.
Finally the verse says, “You are our gods: for in you the fatherless finds mercy.” Hosea concluded this verse with the words, “you are our gods” which means “you, the work of Israel's acts and deeds of their hands exist as our, the people of Israel's, judges, rulers and divine ones”: “for in you” or “because, since and on account that within you, Jehovah God”“the fatherless finds mercy” which means “the orphan and bereaved of children discovers and uncovers deep compassion, tender affection and pity”. Hosea ended this verse by sharing how the people of “Israel” would not declare the deeds of their physical hands as their divine ones because within Jehovah God the orphan discovers compassion and pity.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Hosea continued to exhort “Israel” to realize the Assyrians would not be able to deliver them, and their warhorses would be useless to help them as well. They were never to declare to the idols they formed and fashioned that they were their divine ones, and they were to realize that Jehovah God alone was where their orphans would discover compassion and pity. God wants to be the source of compassion and love to everyone who will accept His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit which will lead us into all truth and provide assurance that He is all we are to worship.
Next time Hosea shares how Jehovah God says, “I will heal their backsliding”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
