In the book of Hosea, Hosea shared how Jehovah God said, “I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon”, and in chapter fourteen and verse seven of Hosea, Hosea said, “they that dwell under his shadow shall return”where we read,
They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn,
and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.
The verse begins, “They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, ...” Hosea began with the words, “they that dwell” or “they, the people of Israel, who are set, live, abide and remain” “under his shadow” which means “beneath his, Jehovah God's, shade” “shall return” or “will turn or come back”; “they shall revive as the corn”which means “they, the people of Israel, will be sustained, remain alive and live prosperously similar to the wheat or grain”. Hosea said the people of Israel who remain and abide beneath the shade of Jehovah God would turn back and will continue to be alive similar to the wheat and grain in the fields.
The verse continues, “... and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.” Hosea added the words, “and grow as the vine” or “and bud, sprout, bloom and shoot forth similar and in likeness to the twining and bending vine especially like the grape vine”: “the scent thereof” which means “the smell, aroma and fragrance belonging to the vine” “shall be as the wine” or “will exist similar to the effervesce or fermented banqueting wine” “of Lebanon”which means “belonging to Lebanon whose name means whiteness and was a wooded mountain range on the northern border of Israel”. Hosea said the people who remain under Jehovah God's shade would bloom and shoot forth similar to the twining grape “vine” whose aroma and fragrance would be similar to the effervescent “wine” belonging to “Lebanon”.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how Hosea referred to how the people of “Israel” who would abide and remain beneath the shade of Jehovah God would not only turn back to Him, but also flourish similar to the wheat or grain in the fields. Their aroma would fill the air with the fragrance of the cedar trees located in “Lebanon”. The idea is that Jehovah God would preserve and protect the people of “Israel” as long as they continued in their relationship with Him. God wants the same for us, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and fill us with His Holy Spirit so we remain under His “shadow” all the days of our lives. (See Psalm 91:1)
Next time Hosea says, “Ephraim shall say, what have I to do any more with idols?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
