Make Me to Know My End - Psalms 39:5

In Psalms chapter thirty nine David said, “LORD, make me to know my end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am, and in chapter thirty nine and verse five of Psalms David said, “you have made my days as an handbreadth” where we read,

Behold, you have made my days as an handbreadth; and my age is as nothing before you:

verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.

The verse begins, Behold, you have made my days as an handbreadth; and my age is as nothing before you: David began with the words, “Behold, you have made my days” or “lo, look and consider, you, Jehovah God, put, set, granted, ascribed, employed, consecrated and entrusted my, David's, time on earth” “as a handbreath” which means “like and similar to a span or width of the hand which is used as a unit of measurement”; “and my age” or “and my, David's, duration and short time of life” “is as nothing before you” which means “exists like not one thing in front and in the presence of you, Jehovah God”. David declared how Jehovah God granted and set his time on earth like a measurement, and his time was short and like “nothing” in His presence.

The verse continues, verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.” David added the words, “verily every man” or “truly, surely and indeed each, the whole and all people both male and female” “at his best state” which means “in his, the person's, prefect, appointed, deputed and established station” “is altogether vanity” or “exists as totally and wholly vapor or emptiness”. “Selah” which means “lift up, exalt and pause to meditate upon it”. David said truly each and every person in their appointed and deputed station exists as wholly empty, and those reading his words should pause and meditate upon this idea.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David understood his time on the earth was short, and though among people he might live for some time, in the presence of God his “days” were a small amount. People themselves have very little worth on their own, and in their “best” condition they are “empty” compared to God's measurement. Even still, God loves people, and though they may be little on their own, He values them greatly. He demonstrated their value by sending His Son Jesus to die on the cross for their sins, and when we submit to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and change us to be meaningful, useful and valuable to Him and His Kingdom. Those who meditate upon their value when they are separated from God versus when they are in a personal relationship with Him should easily praise, honor and give Him glory for all eternity for taking our little value and making us the princes and princesses of the living God when we yield to Him.

Next time David says, surely every man walks in a vain show, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
