In the book of Proverbs Agur said, “There is a generation that curses their father, and does not bless their mother”, and in chapter thirty and verse twelve of Proverbs Agur said, “there is a generation that is pure in their own eyes” where we read,
There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes,
and yet is not washed from filthiness.
The verse begins, “There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, ...” Agur began with the words, “there is a generation” or “there exists a period, age and class of people” “that are pure” which means “who exist as ceremonially and ethically fair and clean” “in their own eyes” or “within their own physical eyes or mental and spiritual faculties”. Agur said an age of people exists who believe themselves to be ceremonially and spiritually clean within their own physical eyes and mental faculties.
The verse goes on to say, “... and yet is not washed from filthiness.” Agur continued with the words, “and yet is not washed” or “and still and even more is in no way or manner bathed” “from filthiness” which means “separate and apart from excrement, dung or pollution”. Agur said the people who believe themselves to be clean are in no way bathed and free from their excrement and pollution.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Agur how there is an age of people who believe themselves to be clean, but because they are never purified from their pollution, they continue to be soiled. God knows we all have sinned and come short of His glory, (See Romans 3:23) and this is why He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and cleanse us from all unrighteousness rather than being only “clean in our own eyes”. (See 1 John 1:9)
Next time Agur says, “there is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
