A Generation with Lofty Eyes - Proverbs 30:13

In the book of Proverbs Agur said, “there is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from filthiness”, and in chapter thirty and verse thirteen of Proverbs Agur said, “there is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes” where we read,

There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes!

And their eyelids are lifted up.

The verse begins, There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! Agur began with the words, “there is a generation” or “there exists a period, age and class of people” “O how lofty” which means “O to what exalted, set on high and uplifted position” “are their eyes” or “exist their physical eyes”. Agur said there exists an age of people who raise their eyes to proudly look around.

The verse continues, “And their eyelids are lifted up. Agur added the words, “and their eyelids” or “and their, the generation with lofty eyes, lids to their eyes” “are lifted up” which means “exist as risen, uplifted and exalted with a pretentious look”. Agur said the age of people with haughty eyes also look around in a pretentious way.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Agur about an age of people who raise their physical eyes in an exalted manner, and use their eyes and eyelids to arrogantly and pretentiously look around. They use their sight to cast disdainful glances upon others because they believe themselves to be just a little bit better than anyone else. God knows us, and He is well aware when we act in a prideful manner. These sinful ways are why He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of everyone, and when we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the value of being humble with our eyes and not to look upon others with disdain.

Next time Agur says, “there is a generation, whose teeth are as swords”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
