In the book of Proverbs Lemuel asked, “Who can find a virtuous woman? … Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come”, and in chapter thirty one and verse twenty-six of Proverbs King Lemuel said, “she opens her mouth with wisdom” where we read,
She opens her mouth with wisdom;
and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
The verse begins, “She opens her mouth with wisdom;” Lemuel began with the words, “she opens her mouth” or “she, the virtuous woman, spreads wide the orifice in her face used for eating, drinking and speaking” “with wisdom” which means “by the use of skill, shrewdness and prudence”. Lemuel said “the virtuous woman” uses her mouth to speak with skill and prudence.
The verse goes on to say, “and in her tongue is the law of kindness.” Lemuel continued with the words, “and in her tongue” or “and within her, the virtuous woman's, wedge in the mouth used for tasting and speaking” “in the law of kindness” which means “within the direction, instruction and manner belonging to goodness, mercy and faithfulness”. Lemuel said “the virtuous woman” uses her “tongue” in keeping with the manner of goodness and faithfulness.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Lemuel how “the virtuous woman” uses her words with skill, prudence and faithfulness. The idea is that she speaks in a wise and godly manner. God gives this ability to people when they surrender their lives to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us an ability to use our words skillfully and with “kindness” so others will know the beauty and wonder of a personal relationship with Him.
Next time Lemuel says, “she looks well to the ways of her household”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
