Open Your Mouth for the Dumb - Proverbs 31:8

In the book of Proverbs Lemuel's mother said, “Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be heavy of hearts. Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more”, and in chapter thirty one and verse eight of Proverbs King Lemuel's mother said, “open your mouth for the dumb” where we read,

Open your mouth for the dumb

in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.

The verse begins, Open your mouth for the dumb ... Lemuel's mother began with the words, “open your mouth” or “let loose and break forth the orifice in your, Lemuel's, face used for eating, drinking and speaking” “for the dumb” which means “on behalf of people who are mute and silent”. Lemuel's mother instructed him to let loose his “mouth” on behalf of people who are mute.

The verse meditate upon, “... in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction. Lemuel's mother added the words, “in the cause” or “within the plea, judgment and dispute” “of all such as are appointed” which means “belonging to each, every, the whole and everyone of the people that exist as the members and offspring” “to destruction” or “toward vanishing and passing away”. Lemuel's mother referred to caring for everyone who belongs to the members of the vanishing and passing away.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Lemuel was to be conscience of people who were unable to speak as well as those who are destined to vanishing and ruin. God wants us to care for people who are disadvantaged and destitute. God is sovereign, and He decides who will have certain things and who will not. He provides for everyone to receive salvation from their sins through His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of the world. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us through His Holy Spirit how to care for others who have disadvantages in this life. (See Matthew 25:35-40)

Next time Lemuel says, “open your mouth, judge righteously”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
