In the book of Proverbs Agur said, “There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yes, four which I know not. The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid. Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eats, and wipes her mouth, and says, I have done no wickedness”, and in chapter thirty and verse twenty-one of Proverbs Agur says, “for three things the earth is disquieted”where we read,
For three things the earth is disquieted,
and for four which I cannot bear.
The verse begins, “For three things the earth is disquieted, ...” Agur began with the words, “for three things” or “because of three objects or items” “the earth is disquieted” which means “the country, territory, region and world trembles, frets and is enraged and disturbed”. Agur said three objects cause the world to tremble and be disturbed.
The verse goes on to say, “... and for four which I cannot bear.” Agur continued with the words, “and for four” or “and because of four objects or items” “which I cannot bear” which means “that I, Agur, am unable to lift up, carry away, sustain or endure”. Agur said four items exist that he is unable to sustain and endure.
When we consider Agur's words in this verse, we learn how he was troubled by three and then four items that were in the world. Not only did these things cause the world to tremble, but also he was unable to sustain or endure them. We shall discover what these items are in our next verse, but for now let us consider that whatever causes us to tremble and that we do not understand, God does. God is omniscient, and He loves us. He proved His love to us when He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the value of knowing, loving and trusting Him with everything that troubles us and causes us to be perplexed within our minds.
Next time Agur shares about, “a servant … and a fool”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
