In the book of Proverbs Agur said, “There be three things which go well, yes, four are comely in going; A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turns not away for any”, and in chapter thirty and verse thirty-one of Proverbs Agur shared about, “a greyhound” where we read,
A greyhound; an he goat also;
and a king, against whom there is no rising up
The verse begins, “A greyhound; an he goat also;” Agur began with the words, “a greyhound” or “an animal which is a racer or some fleet animal as being slender in the waist”; “an he goat also” which means “a butting and bucking male goat”. Agur referred to an animal that is fleet of foot or a racer and a bucking male goat for the next two objects which he considered “comely in going”.
The verse goes on to say, “and a king, against whom there is no rising up” Agur continued with the words, “and a king” or “and a royal leader or ruler”, “against whom” which means “in spite of and with the royal ruler” “there is no rising up” or “there exists not any resistance or rebellion”. Agur referred to the royal ruler and leader with which there is no rebellion, resistance and revolt.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Agur about the other three things that are “comely” in their “going” - “a greyhound, an he goat and a king”. Each of these have their abilities to manage their lives, and whether it is fleeting, bucking or resistance to rebellion, all of their traits are valuable to consider in our own lives. God gave these three objects their traits, and because He is our Creator God, He will give us His gifts as well. God loves us, and He proved His love to us when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins. (See John 15:13) When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His gifts and ways in keeping with His perfect purposes and will.
Next time Agur shares what to do, “if you have done foolishly in lifting up yourself”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
