In the book of Proverbs Lemuel's mother said, “Open your mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction”, and in chapter thirty one and verse nine of Proverbs King Lemuel's mother said, “open your mouth, judge righteously” where we read,
Open your mouth, judge righteously,
and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
The verse begins, “Open your mouth, judge righteously, ...” Lemuel's mother began with the words, “open your mouth” or “let loose and break forth the orifice in your, Lemuel's, face used for eating, drinking and speaking”, “judge righteously” which means “discriminate, vindicate and govern in a right, just, lawful and correct manner”. Lemuel's mother instructed him to let loose his “mouth” to bring forth just, lawful and correct vindication.
The verse think through, “... and plead the cause of the poor and needy.” Lemuel's mother continued with the words, “and plead the cause” or “and contend, execute and strive for the judgment and case” “of the poor” which means “belonging to people who are in want, impoverished and destitute” “and needy” or “and subject to oppression, affliction and trouble”. Lemuel's mother told him to use his voice to contend for people who are impoverished and oppressed.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how we are not only to be aware that there are people who are destitute and afflicted, but also that they are to be cared for by us. God cares for all people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. When we yield to Him, we will be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and given His Holy Spirit who will put within us a compassion for people who are destitute and afflicted in this world.
Next time Lemuel asks, “who can find a virtuous woman?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
