In the book of Proverbs Agur said, “The horseleach has two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yes, four things say not, It is enough”, and in chapter thirty and verse sixteen of Proverbs Agur shared about, “the grave; the barren womb; the earth ... and the fire” where we read,
The grave; and the barren womb;
the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that says not, It is enough.
The verse begins, “The grave; and the barren womb;” Agur began with the words, “the grave” or “sheol, the underworld, hell and the pit”, “and the barren womb” which means “and the restrained, closed and shut up uterus or prenatal chamber”. Agur said the underworld, hell and the pit as well as the closed up birthing “womb” are among the things that are never satisfied.
The verse goes on to say, “the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that says not, It is enough.” Agur continued with the words, “the earth” or “the wilderness, ground or world” “that is not filled with water” which means “ that is not at all sated, fulfilled and surfeited with water”; “and the fire” or “and the burning, hot and fiery flames” “that says not”which means “which does not utter, declare or proclaim”, “it is enough” or “it is ample, adequate and sufficient”. Agur said the world is not sated with water and burning flames are also among the objects that are in no way satisfied.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Agur what the four things that are “never satisfied” are “the grave, the barren womb, the earth not filled with water and the fire”. God knows the passion and desire built within each of these, and they continually want for more. God loves us, and with all our desires and passions, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of every one of us. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit who brings“satisfaction” to us that the four objects shall never know.
Next time Agur shares about, “the eye that mocks at his father”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
