In the first chapter and first verse of the book of Hosea, Hosea wrote, “the word of the LORD that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahas, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel”, and in chapter one and verse two of Hosea, Hosea said, “the beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea” where we read,
The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea.
And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take unto you a wife of whoredoms
and children of whoredoms: for the land has committed great whoredom,
departing from the LORD.
The verse begins with the words, “The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea.” Hosea began with the words, “the beginning of the word” which means “the first, opening and commencement pertaining to the speech, utterance, sayings and declaration” “of the LORD” or “belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “by Hosea” which means “through Hosea whose name means salvation”. Hosea referred to the commencement of Jehovah God's utterance to him.
The verse continues, “And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take unto you a wife of whoredoms ...” Hosea added the words, “and the LORD” or “and Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “said to Hosea”which means “commanded, uttered, declared and proclaimed to Hosea whose name means salvation”, “Go” or “depart, move away and be lead away”, “take unto you a wife of whoredoms” which means “receive, take in and procure a female wedded spouse who is adulterous, commits fornication and is a prostitute”. Hosea said Jehovah God commanded him to procure a “wife” who was a prostitute.
The verse goes on to say, “and children of whoredoms: for the land has committed great whoredom,...” Hosea continued with the words, “and children of whoredoms” or “and the offspring and progeny belonging to a woman who is adulterous, commits fornication and is a prostitute” “for the land” which means “on behalf of the country, territory, region and nation” “has committed great whoredom” or “has played the harlot, committed fornication and adulterous”. Hosea shared how Jehovah God told him to marry a woman who was the offspring of a prostitute as well because the nation of Israel was adulterous and as a harlot.
Finally the verse says, “departing from the LORD.” The verse concludes with the words, “departing from” which means “separating apart from” “the LORD” or “Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. Hosea ended this verse by sharing Jehovah God's observation of the nation of Israel's separation from Him.
When we consider the words in this verse, we discover the introduction to the book of Hosea. Hosea received Jehovah God's commandment to marry a prostitute who was most likely the offspring of a prostitute as well. The reason for this unusual command was because this would be a symbol of the nation of Israel and their separation from their relationship with God. We shall see how this story unfolds in the following verses, and the events and people involved will demonstrate how much God cares for Israel. God loves us as well, and He proved His love to us when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for our sins. When we surrender to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and show us through His Holy Spirit how His love and preservation of Israel served to bring His Son Jesus and salvation through Him to the world.
Next time Hosea says, “he went and took Gomer the daughters of Diblaim”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
