Conies - Proverbs 30:26

In the book of Proverbs the Agur said, “There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise. The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer”, and in chapter thirty and verse twenty-six of Proverbs Agur says, “the conies are but a feeble folk” where we read,

The conies are but a feeble folk,

yet make they their houses in the rocks;

The verse begins, The conies are but a feeble folk, ... The writer began with the words, “the conies” or “the rock badger or hyrax” “are but a feeble folk” which means “exist as a creatures with little power and might” . Agur referred to the “hyraxes” that are not very powerful.

The verse continues, “... yet make they their houses in the rocks; Agur added the words, “yet make they their houses” or “still the hyraxes put, set, appoint and place their habitations, abodes and dwelling places” “in the rocks” which means “within the cliffs or crags”. Agur said the hyraxes set their habitations within the cliffs.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Agur how “conies” or “hyraxes” are not very mighty or strong, however, they are wise enough to establish their dwelling places within the “rocky” crags where they are not easy for predators to access. This is the second of the “four things which are little on the earth” mentioned by Agur, and Jehovah God is responsible for putting this wisdom within these “conies”. God loves His creation, and He loves us. He desires to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins to make this possible. When we yield our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to consider the “wisdom” of the “hyrax” who knows how to dwell in a place that makes it less accessible to be prey.

Next time Agur shares about, “the locusts”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
