The Eye that Mocks His Father - Proverbs 30:17

In the book of Proverbs Agur said, “The horseleach has two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yes, four things say not, It is enough. The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that says not, It is enough”, and in chapter thirty and verse seventeen of Proverbs Agur shared about, “the eye that mocks at his father” where we read,

The eye that mocks at his father, and despises to obey his mother,

the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.

The verse begins, The eye that mocks at his father, and despises to obey his mother, Agur began with the words, “the eye” or “the physical eye or mental and spiritual faculties” “that mocks at his father” which means “which derides, stammers and laughs in scorn toward his, the eye's, immediate male progenitor and ancestor”, “and despises to obey” or “and holds in contempt, insignificant and trivial” “his mother” which means “his, the eye's, immediate female progenitor and ancestor”. Agur referred to the person who employs their physical eye and mental and spiritual faculties to laugh in scorn at their “father” and to “hold in contempt” their “mother”.

The verse goes on to say, “the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it. Agur continued with the words, “the ravens” or “the dusky hue and black colored birds” “of the valley” which means “belonging to the wadi, torrent or narrow shaft through which a brook, stream or river runs” “shall pick it out” or “will bore, dig out and pierce it, the eye”, “and the young eagles” which means “and the youthful offspring of the eagle, vulture or other large bird of prey” “shall eat it” or “will devour and consume it, the eye”. Agur said the “black raven birds” will pierce and bore out “the eye” of person who “mocks their father” and “despises their mother”, and the offspring of the large birds of prey will devour it.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Agur how there are devastating results for people who“mock” and “despise” their parents. This graphic description of what happens to the person should keep anyone from committing this horrific sin. God knows we all have sin in our lives like these people, and this is why He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a reverence for the parents and authorities that He has given to us.

Next time Agur shares about, “three things which are too wonderful for me, yes, four”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
