In the book of Hosea, Hosea shared how his wife Gomer, “conceived again, and bare a daughter. And God said unto him, Call her name Loruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel; but I will utterly take them away”, and in chapter one and verse seven of Hosea, Hosea shared how the LORD said, “I will have mercy upon the house of Judah”where we read,
But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah,
and will save them by the LORD their God,
and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horseman.
The verse begins, “But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, ...” Hosea began with the words, “but I will have mercy” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover I, Jehovah God, shall have deep compassion, tender affection and pity” “upon the house of Judah” or “on the dwelling place, habitation and abode belonging to Judah whose name means praised and was the kingdom comprises of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin which occupied the souther part of Canaan after the nation split upon the death of Solomon”. Hosea shared how Jehovah God declared that He would have pity upon the nation of “Judah”.
The verse continues, “and will save them by the LORD their God, ...” Hosea added the words, “and will save them” or “and shall liberate, rescue, deliver and give victory to the people of Judah” “by the LORD” which means “through the means of Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “their God” or “their, the people of the nation of Judah's, Supreme and True God”. Hosea shared how Jehovah God would liberate the people within the nation of “Judah”.
Finally the verse says, “and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horseman.” Hosea continued, “and will not save them” or “and shall in no way or means liberate, rescue, deliver and give victory to the nation of Judah” “by bow” which means “through the means an archer's bow for shooting”, “nor by sword” or “no and not in any way through the means of knife, axe, dagger or mattock”, “nor by battle” which means “no and not through any means of a fight or war”, “by horses” or “through the means of a swallow, swift or leaping horse”, “nor by horseman” which means “no and not in any way through the means of the driver of steeds or warhorses”. Hosea concluded this verse by adding that Jehovah God would not liberate nor rescue “Judah” through the conventional means of a “bow, sword, battle, horses or horsemen”.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we discover through Hosea how Jehovah God was to involve Himself within the lives of the people in the nation of Judah, and although they were under oppression, God used the unfaithful wife of Hosea as a symbol of Israel to demonstrate His willingness to extend pity to them. The northern tribes of Israel would not receive God's mercy, but the southern tribes of Judah did. They did not deserve His “mercy”, but God is willing to give His pity to everyone who comes to Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a desire to see Him conquer our foes without the conventional means by which people go to battle and war.
Next time Hosea shares how his wife Gomer, “conceived” again, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
