In the book of Proverbs Agur said, “Two things have I required of you; deny me them not before I die. Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me. Lest I be full, and deny you, and say, Who is the LORD? Or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain”, and in chapter thirty and verse ten of Proverbs Agur said, “accuse not a servant unto his master” where we read,
Accuse not a servant unto his master,
lest he curse you, and you be found guilty.
The verse begins, “Accuse not a servant unto his master, ...” Agur began with the words, “accuse not a servant” or “do not calumniate, slander or wag the tongue concerning a slave, bondman or person of servile condition” “unto his master” which means “to his, the servant's whether male or female's, firm and strong superintendent, proprietor or sovereign owner”. Agur instructed his readers and listeners not to slander a person of servile condition to their proprietor or owner.
The verse goes on to say, “lest he curse you, and you be found guilty.” Agur continued with the words, “lest he curse you” or “beware, peradventure and whether he, the servant, trifle, make light, insignificant and less esteemed you, Agur's readers and listeners”, “and you be found guilty” which means “and you, Agur's readers and listeners, be discovered, perceived and known as wrong, injurious, incriminated and offensive”. Agur said the servant would consider his readers and listeners insignificant and injurious if they slandered them to their owners.
When we mediate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Agur how we are not to wag our tongues against a servant or employee to their owner or boss. Whenever we are discovered for doing so, not only will the person consider us as less esteemed, but they will also know that we are offensive. God wants us to love one another in the same manner that He loves us, (See John 13:34; 15:12; 15:17; Romans 13:8) and when we consider that He gave His Son Jesus to be crucified on the cross for our sins, as we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His compassion within us toward people whether they are servants, employees, proprietors or bosses.
Next time Agur says, “there is a generation that curses their father”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
