A Generation that Curses Their Parents - Proverbs 30:11

In the book of Proverbs Agur said, “Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest he curse you, and you be found guilty”, and in chapter thirty and verse eleven of Proverbs Agur said, “there is a generation that curses their father” where we read,

There is a generation that curses their father,

and does not bless their mother.

The verse begins, There is a generation that curses their father, ... Agur began with the words, “there is a generation” or “there exists a period, age and class of people” “that curses their father” which means “who slights, gives little account and lightly esteems their immediate male progenitor and ancestor”. Agur said an age of people exists who lightly esteems their immediate progenitor.

The verse continues, “... and does not bless their mother. Agur added the words, “and does not bless” or “an in no way or manner adores, praises or salutes” “their mother” which means “their, the generation who curses their father's, immediate female progenitor and ancestor”. Agur said this same age of people in no way or manner praises their female progenitor.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Agur how there exists a age of people who fail to keep God's law for their parents. God loves family, and parents are given to produce a life that may have a personal relationship with Him. When we yield our life to God's Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us to honor our parents because this is right and good before His eyes. (See Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:1-3)

Next time Agur says, “there is a generation that is pure in their own eyes”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
