In the book of Proverbs Agur said, “There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yes, four which I know not”, and in chapter thirty and verse nineteen of Proverbs Agur shared about, “the eagle, the serpent, a ship and a man” where we read,
The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock;
the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.
The verse begins, “The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock;” Agur began with the words, “the way of an eagle” or “the journey, direction, manner and course of life belonging to the eagle, vulture or other large bird of prey” “in the air” which means “within the visible sky”; “the way of a serpent” or “the journey, direction, manner and course of life belonging to a snake” “upon a rock” which means “on a cliff, rocky wall, stone or boulder”. Agur said he did not understand the direction and way of travel of the eagle or large bird of prey nor the manner and course of a snake upon a rocky cliff or boulder.
The verse goes to say, “the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.” Agur added the words, “the way of a ship” or “the journey, direction, manner and course belonging to a large merchant boat” “in the midst of the sea” which means “within the middle of a large body of water such as the Red, Dead or Mediterranean Sea”; “and the way of a man” or “and the journey, direction, manner and course of life belonging to a male human being” “with a maid” which means “alongside a virgin or young woman of marriageable age”. Agur said he was unaware of the journey and direction of the a large merchant boat on the “sea” and the manner and course of a male human being with a young maiden.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Agur how the direction and journey of “the eagle, serpent, ship and a man” were unknown to him. God however, knows all these things, and because He is omniscient or all-knowing, He knows us as well. God loves us, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us an understanding that He is well aware of the manner of all His Creation even when we do not understand.
Next time Agur shares about, “the way of an adulterous woman”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
