The Way of An Adulterous Woman - Proverbs 30:20

In the book of Proverbs Agur said, “There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yes, four which I know not. The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid”, and in chapter thirty and verse twenty of Proverbs Agur says, “such is the way of an adulterous woman” where we read,

Such is the way of an adulterous woman;

she eats, and wipes her mouth, and says, I have done no wickedness.

The verse begins, Such is the way of an adulterous woman; Agur began with the words, “such is the way” or “thus, therefore, then, forasmuch and hitherto exists the journey, direction, manner and habit” “of an adulterous woman” which means “belonging to a female human being who breaks wedlock and becomes idolatrous by committing adultery”. Agur said the following is the behavior of a “woman” who breaks her marriage vows and commits adultery.

The verse continues, “she eats, and wipes her mouth, and says, I have done no wickedness. Agur added the words, “she eats” or “she, the adulterous woman, consumes, devours, wastes and destroys”, “and wipes her mouth” which means “and blots by stroking or rubbing her, the adulterous woman's, orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking”,“and says” or “and utters, declares and proclaims”, “I have done no wickedness” which means “I, the adulterous woman, have performed, produce and committed not any trouble, sorrow or iniquity”. Agur said the “adulterous woman” devours and destroys, blots her “mouth” by stroking and declares that she has perform nothing evil or wrong.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Agur about the manner and course of life of the woman who violates her marriage vows by committing “adultery”. This woman performs her treacherous act and afterward declares that she has done nothing amiss. God knows better, and He is well aware of every sin we commit. We “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (See Romans 3:23), and “the wages for sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. (See Romans 6:23) This is why God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us from sinful behaviors that we do not acknowledge and perhaps declare that we have done nothing wrong.

Next time Agur says, “for three things the earth is disquieted”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
