Laying Her Hand to the Spindle - Proverbs 31:19

In the book of Proverbs Lemuel asked, “Who can find a virtuous woman? … She perceives that her merchandise is good: her candle goes not out by night”, and in chapter thirty one and verse nineteen of Proverbs King Lemuel said, “she lays her hands to the spindle” where we read,

She lays her hands to the spindle,

and her hands hold the distaff.

The verse begins, She lays her hands to the spindle, ... Lemuel began with the words, “she lays her hands” or “she, the virtuous woman, stretches out and extends her physical hands” “to the spindle” which means “to the shank of the distaff by which it is twirled”. Lemuel said “the virtuous woman” extends her physical hand to the distaff of a spindle by which wool and yard are spun.

The verse goes on to say, “... and her hands hold the distaff. Lemuel continued with the words, “and her hands” or “and her, the virtuous woman's, physical hands” “hold the distaff” which means “grasp, support and hold up the whirling stick or part of the spindle”. Lemuel said “the virtuous woman” grasps and holds up the whirling part of the spindle

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Lemuel how “the virtuous woman” works with the devise that produces linens and clothing. The idea again is that she uses her skill and ability to work with her hands to provide for her home. God puts these traits within people, and when we yield our lives to His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to be industrious and skillful with our minds and hands to provide for our households in a manner that is pleasing to Him.

Next time Lemuel says, “she stretches out her hand to the poor”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
