Their Mother Has Played the Harlot - Hosea 2:5

In the book of Hosea, Hosea shared how his son Jezreel told his brother and sister, “Plead with your mother, plead: for she is not my wife, neither am I her husband: let her therefore put away her whoredoms out of her sight, and her adulteries from between her breasts. Lest I strip her naked, and set her as in the day that she was born, and make her as a wilderness, and set her like a dry land, and slay her with thirst. And I will not have mercy upon her children; for they be the children of whoredoms”, and in chapter two and verse five of Hosea, Hosea said, “for their mother has played the harlot” where we read,

For their mother has played the harlot: she that conceived them has done shamefully:

for she said, I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread and my water,

my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.

The verse begins, “For their mother has played the harlot: she that conceived them has done shamefully:” Hosea began with the words, “for their mother” or “because, since and on account that their, Loammi and Loruhamah's immediate female progenitor and ancestor” “has played the harlot” which means “has committed fornication and been unfaithful”: “she that conceived them” or “she, Hosea's wife Gomer, who became pregnant with Loammi and Loruhamah” “has done shamefully” which means “has performed that which is withered, dried up, confusing and embarrassing”. Hosea said the female progenitor of Loammi and Loruhamah committed adultery and performed that which is confusing and embarrassing.

The verse continues, “for she said, I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread and my water,” Hosea added the words, “for she said” or “because, since and on account that she, Hosea's wife Gomer, uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “I will go after my lovers” which means “I, Gomer, shall leave, depart and proceed toward my, Gomer's, affectionate sexual companions”, “that give me my bread” or “who grant, bestow and provide to me, Gomer, my food, grain and meat” “and my water” which means “and my, Gomer's, liquid refreshment”. Hosea shared how Hosea's wife Gomer declared that she would continue in her pursuit of her sexual companions because they provided her with food and liquid refreshment.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Hosea was aware of his wife Gomer's infidelity, and even so, she declared that she was going to continue her adulterous ways because her “lovers” provided for her. This was the same for the nation of Israel. They forsook Jehovah God to pursue other “loves” because they appeared to provide for them. We shall see how they would be disappointed in their pursuits and how God is willing to continue to love and forgive them. He does the same for anyone who will yield to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to see the benefit of leaving all other gods to only pursue Him.

Next time Hosea says, “I will hedge up your way with thorns”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
