In the book of Proverbs Agur said, “There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men”, and in chapter thirty and verse fifteen of Proverbs Agur said, “the horseleach has two daughters, crying, Give, give” where we read,
The horseleach has two daughters, crying, Give, give.
There are three things that are never satisfied, yes, four things say not, It is enough.
The verse begins, “The horseleach has two daughters, crying, Give, give.” Agur began with the words, “the horseleach” or “the insatiable blood sucking leech” “has two daughters” which means “possesses two female offsprings or progenies”, “crying” or “shouting aloud and speaking loudly” “Give, give” which means “provide, provide or ascribe, ascribe”. Agur said the insatiable bloodsucking leech possesses two female offsprings which shout loudly provide, provide.
The verse continues, “There are three things that are never satisfied, yes, four things say not, It is enough.” Agur added the words, “there are three things” or “there exists three objects or items” “that are never satisfied” which means “which exist not at all or at any time sated, fulfilled and surfeited”, “yes, four things say not” or “even so and indeed four objects or items that do not utter, proclaim or declare”, “It is enough” which means “the supply is sufficient, sated, fulfilled and surfeited”. Agur said four objects are not at any time sated or fulfilled.
When we consider the words in this verse, we see how Agur employed the illustration of a “leech” and it's continual desire for provision. He also wrote of three and then four items that are not at any time fulfilled to declare a sufficient amount has been supplied. God knows people are like this as they continually desire more and more and never seem to have a sufficient amount. Because of this, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and His satisfaction is the only one that fulfills. When we yield to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and “supply all our need according to His riches in glory”. (See Philippians 4:19)
Next time Agur shares about, “the grave; the barren womb; the earth ... and the fire”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
