Not For Kings to Drink Wine - Proverbs 31:4

In the book of Proverbs Lemuel's mother told him, “Give not your strength unto women, nor your ways to that which destroys kings”, and in chapter thirty one and verse four of Proverbs King Lemuel's mother said, “it is not for kings to drink wine” where we read,

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine;

nor for princes strong drink.

The verse begins, It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; Lemuel began with the words, “it is not for kings” or “it is in no way or manner in the interest of royal rulers and leaders”, “O Lemuel” which means “O Lemuel whose name means for God”, “it is not for kings” or “it is in no way or manner in the interest of royal rulers and leaders” “to drink wine” which means “to take in or imbibe fermented fruit of the vine to the point of intoxication”. Lemuel's mother told him that imbibing intoxicating fruit of the vine is not to be for royal rulers and leaders.

The verse goes on to say, “nor for princes strong drink. Lemuel continued with the words, “nor for princes” or “no and not in any way in the interest of youthful, weighty, judicious and commanding rulers to imbibe” “strong drink” which means “fermented, intoxicating and alcoholic liquor”. Lemuel's mother told him that young leaders were not to imbibe intoxicating alcoholic beverages.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how Lemuel's mother gave him instruction concerning intoxicating alcoholic drinks. He was not to imbibe “wine” nor “strong drink”, and we shall see why in our next verse. God knows what is best for us, and because He loves us, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins. When we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the value of not allowing intoxicating drinks to alter our thoughts and actions in any way.

Next time Lemuel's mother says, “lest they drink, and forget the law”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
