In the book of Proverbs Lemuel asked, “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband does safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She seeks wool, and flax, and works willingly with her hands”, and in chapter thirty one and verse fourteen of Proverbs King Lemuel said, “she is like the merchants' ship” where we read,
She is like the merchants' ships,
she brings her food from afar.
The verse begins, “She is like the merchants' ships, ...” Lemuel began with the words, “she is like” or “she, the virtuous woman, exists similar and in likeness to” “the merchants' ships” which means “the large business sailing vessels”. Lemuel said the “virtuous woman” is also similar to the large sailing vessels that carry many wares.
The verse continues, “... she brings her food from afar.” Lemuel added the words, “she brings her food” or “she, the virtuous woman, attains and comes in with her, the woman's, bread, grain and meats” “from afar” which means “separate and apart from a far country or distant place”. Lemuel said “the virtuous woman” attains and comes in with her bread and meat from a distant place.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Lemuel how “the virtuous woman” travels great distances to provide bread and meat for her home. “The merchant ships” were known to bring in merchandise from distant lands, and because they were easy to access, people took advantage of them when they came into port. The “virtuous woman” brings food to her home and provides for her family. God provides for us as well, and because everything belongs to Him, He has an abundant supply. He gave us His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, and when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us provision according to His abundant supply of riches in glory. (See Philippians 4:19)
Next time Lemuel says, “she rises also while it is yet night”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
