Flattering Lips and Speaking Proud Things - Psalms 12:3

In Psalms chapter twelve David said, Help, LORD; for the godly man ceases, for the faithful fail from among the children of men. They speak vanity every one with his neighbor: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak, and in chapter twelve and verse three of Psalms David said, “The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips” where we read,

The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaks proud things:

The verse begins, The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, ...” David began with the words, “The LORD” which means “Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name of the One True God” “shall cut off” or “will eliminate, kill and destroy” “all flattering lips” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the people using smoothness and slippery language, speech and talk”. David said Jehovah God would eliminate and destroy each and every person who uses smoothness of speech and slippery language.

The verse continues, “... and the tongue that speaks proud things:” David added the words, “and the tongue” or “and the physical tongue of the person” “that speaks proud things” which means “who utters, declares and proclaims great, haughty, boastful and insolent words and ideas”. David said Jehovah God would also eliminate the “tongue” of the ungodly and unfaithful ones who boastfully declare haughty and lofty ideas and proclamations.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Jehovah God involves Himself in the “smooth talking” and boastful speech of “ungodly and unfaithful” people. Jesus said, “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (See Luke 6:45), and God is aware of every word people say. Jesus also said, “I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment” (See Matthew 12:36), and we can be assured that “flattering lips” and “the tongue that speaks proud things” will be among them. God knew the heart condition of every person, and because our speech reveals how we think and what we are really like inside, every person is in need of a “Savior”. Jehovah God sent His Son Jesus to die for the sins of everyone, and when we surrender our lives to Him, we will be forgiven of our sins and granted everlasting life even when those sins are revealed in smooth or boastful speech. Let us give praise to Jehovah God for His forgiveness and His offer to cleanse our “tongues” from speaking and talking with smooth and haughty words.

Next time David writes how the wicked says, with our tongue will we prevail, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
