In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how Jehovah God asked, “who has despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth. Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof? And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? And he answered me and said, Know you not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth”, and in chapter five and verse one of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how he saw, “a flying roll”where we read,
Then I turned, and lifted up my eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll.
The verse reads, “Then I turned, and lifted up my eyes, …” Zechariah began with the words, “then I turned” or “at that time I, Zechariah, rotated ”, “and lifted up my eyes” which means “and exalted, supported and raised my, Zechariah's, physical eyes”. Zechariah shared how he rotated his body and raised up his physical eyes to see the following.
The verse continues, “... and behold a flying roll.” Zechariah added the words, “and behold” or “and lo, look and consider” “a flying roll” which means “a book, writing or scroll hovering to and fro”. Zechariah called upon his readers to consider that he saw a scroll with writing upon it that was hovering above him and going to and fro.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how he altered his position and focused his physical “eyes” upon a scroll with writing upon it that was hovering above. We shall see what this scroll was in our next few verses, but for now, let us be reminded that God used this vision and the separate parts of it to reveal to Zechariah that He was indeed working in the lives of the people of Israel. God loves Israel, and He loves us. Even when we are unaware of what God is doing, let us be reminded that He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us an understanding that even when we are unaware, He is at work by His Spirit in our lives and in the lives of those around us.
Next time Zechariah shares how the angel asks him, “what do you see?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
