In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sits in the midst of the ephah. And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof”, and in chapter five and verse nine of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings” where we read,
Then lifted I up my eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.
The verse reads, “Then lifted I up my eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings;” Zechariah began with the words, “then lifted I up my eyes” or “at that time I, Zechariah, exalted and raised my, Zechariah's, physical eyes”, “and looked” which means “and inspected, perceived and had vision”, “and behold” or “and lo, look and consider”, “there came out two women” which means “and there departed and went forth two female beings”, “and the wind” or “and the breeze or breath of air” “was in their wings” which means “existed within their, the two female being's, extremities, edges, corners and overspreading feathers”. Zechariah shared how he raised his physical eyes again and observed two females who had the breeze of air within their extremities.
The verse goes on to say, “for they had wings like the wings of a stork:” Zechariah continued with the words, “for they had wings” or “because, since and on account that they, the two female beings, owned and possessed extremities, edges, corners and overspreading feathers” “like the wings” which means “similar and in likeness to the extremities, edges, corners and overspreading feathers” “of a stork” or “belonging to a stork bird”. Zechariah shared how the two female beings possessed extremities which were similar to the feathers belonging to the bird known as a stork.
Finally the verse says, “and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.” Zechariah concluded this verse with the words, “and they lifted up the ephah” which means “and they, the two women, exalted and raised the basket or receptacle for measuring or holding a dry measure of quantity that is equal to about nine imperial gallons” “between the earth” or “in the midst of the country, region, district, land and ground” “and the heaven” which means “and the visible sky”. Zechariah ended this verse by sharing how the “two female beings with wings and the wind beneath them” raised the basket with the lead covering in between the land and the sky.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn more about Zechariah's vision as he saw “two female beings with wings similar to a stork bird that had a breeze of air flowing under them”, and they used them to lift the basket which had the woman name wickedness inside it and a lead covering over the top of it. We can imaging the basket being raised and carried by the two female beings as they were taking it to God's destination for it. This was a symbol of the nation of Israel, and we shall see how it relates to them in our next verses. For now let us be reminded that God has a plan, and He is going to work it out in the lives of the people of Israel and in our lives. He had a plan for the salvation of our souls when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins and to be raised from the dead three days later. When we humble ourselves, repent of our sins and believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and lead us into all truth by His Holy Spirit according to His Divine purposes for our lives.
Next time Zechariah asks the angel, “where do these bear the ephah?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
