In Psalms chapter fifty nine David said, “You therefore, O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen: be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah. They return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city”, and in chapter fifty-nine and verse seven of Psalms David said, “They belch out with their mouth” where we read,
Behold, they belch out with their mouth: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, does hear?
The verse begins, “Behold, they belch out with their mouth:” David began with the words, “Behold, they belch out” or “lo, look and consider, they, the heathen, pour out, gush forth, bubble up, ferment and emit” “with their mouth” which means “by the use of their, the heathen's, orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking”. David desired that Jehovah God consider how the “heathen” gush forth and emit with their mouths for speaking.
The verse continues, “swords are in their lips: for who, say they, does hear?” David added the words, “swords are in their lips” or “knives, axes, daggers and sharpened implements exist within the heathen's language, speech, prating and talk”: “for who, say they, does hear” which means “because, since and on account that they, the heathen, question what person listens to, perceives and pays attention to what they utter, declare and proclaim”? David said the “heathen” used their speaking like sharpened instruments for battle because they doubt whether any person pay attention to or perceives what they declare.
When we meditate upon words in this verse, we see how David said the “heathen” gush forth with their speech, and their words are like sharpened instruments of war. They do not think anyone hears what they say, but they are mistaken. God hears everything, and every person will give an account of what they say. (See Matthew 12:36) God knew His judgment would be upon everyone, and so He sent His Son Jesus to die for the sins of them all. When we surrender our lives to Jesus, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and be gracious to us concerning our words. Let us never be among those who think they are unheard but shall give an account for every idle word without the grace of Jesus.
Next time David says, “But you, O LORD, shall laugh at them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
