A Man Shall Be Commended - Proverbs 12:8

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand”, and in chapter twelve and verse eight of Proverbs Solomon said, “a man shall be commended according to his wisdom” where we read,

A man shall be commended according to his wisdom:

but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.

The verse begins, A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: Solomon began with the words, “a man shall be commended” or “a person whether male or female will shine, be boasted about and praised” “according to his wisdom” which means “in keeping with his, the person's, skill, shrewdness and prudence”. Solomon shared how a person who is skilled and prudent will shine and be praised in keeping with their wise sayings, acts and deeds.

The verse goes on to say, “but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised.” Solomon continued with the words, “but he that is of a perverse heart” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover a person whether male or female who possesses a twisted, bent, bowed down, wrong and distorted soul, mind, will, desire, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and passions” “shall be despised” which means “will be disrespected, shamed and held in contempt”. Solomon said a person will be disrespected and held in contempt who possesses a soul, mind and will that is twisted and distorted.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we discover through Solomon how a wise person is praised and admired, but a person with a distorted soul is disrespected and shamed. God wants us to be among the “wise” and separate from the foolish and twisted. He knows sin reigns in the hearts of every person, and that sin keeps us from having a personal intimate relationship with Him. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross and resurrected from the dead three days later so everyone who believes in Him will be saved from the penalty of sin which is death. (See Romans 6:23) When we put our faith and trust in Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth so we will shine in the “wisdom” He provides. (See John 16:13)

Next time Solomon says, “he that is despised … is better than he that honors himself”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
