Speaking Truth - Proverbs 12:17

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “A fool's wrath is presently known: but a prudent man covers shame”, and in chapter twelve and verse seventeen of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that speaks truth shows forth righteousness” where we read,

He that speaks truth shows forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit.

The verse begins, He that speaks truth shows forth righteousness: Solomon began with the words, “he that speaks truth” or “the person whether male or female who utters, declares and proclaims that which is firm, steadfast, steady and trustworthy” “shows forth righteousness” which means “tells, declares, announces, reports and make conspicuous that which is just, right, correct and lawful”. Solomon shared how the person who declares that which is steadfast and trustworthy makes conspicuous and known that which is just and correct.

The verse goes on to say, “but a false witness deceit.” Solomon continued with the words, “but a false witness” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover a person who provides deceptive, disappointing, fraudulent and wrong testimony and evidence” “deceit” which means “treachery, falsehood and subtlety”. Solomon said a fraudulent and deceptive person declares falsehood and treachery.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon contrasted the person who tells the “truth” with those who declare lies. The one who tells the “truth” demonstrates their just and right ways, but the person who lies demonstrates their treachery. God wants us to be “truthful witnesses”, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins, errors and wrongs of every person so we could be saved from death, (the penalty for sins - See Romans 6:23), forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and to receive His Holy Spirit who shall guide us into all truth (See John 16:13) so our testimony will be according to that which is just, right, correct and lawful according to Him.

Next time Solomon says, “there is that speaks like the piercings of a sword”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
