Treasures of Wickedness or Righteousness - Proverbs 10:2

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “A wise son makes a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother”, and in chapter ten and verse two of Proverbs Solomon said, “treasures of wickedness profit nothing” where we read,

Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivers from death.

The verse begins, “Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: Solomon began with the words, “treasures of wickedness” or “gold, silver, supplies, storehouses and garners belonging to wrong, guilt, crime and iniquity” profit nothing which means “gain, benefit and avail not one thing”. Solomon shared how the valuables belonging to that which is wrong and criminal do not gain or benefit anything.

The verse continues, “but righteousness delivers from death.” Solomon added the words, “but righteousness” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover that which is right, just, truthful and prosperous” “delivers from death” which means “rescues, saves and snatches a person separate and apart from pestilence, ruin and dying”. Solomon said that which is right and just rescues a persons from pestilence and dying.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how Solomon said the valuables gained when criminal and evil behavior is employed do not benefit the person in the long run. The person who employs just, right and lawful ways incorporates the values of God, and those values save them from dying. This is not just referring to physical “death”, but also eternal separation from God. God wants to have a personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus whom He sent into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us away from “wicked” ways so we may live in a just and lawful manner before Him.

Next time Solomon says, “the LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
