In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “A righteous man regards the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel”, and in chapter twelve and verse eleven of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that tills his land shall be satisfied with bread” where we read,
He that tills his land shall be satisfied with bread:
but he that follows vain persons is void of understanding.
The verse begins, “He that tills his land shall be satisfied with bread:” Solomon began with the words, “he that tills his land” or “he, or the person whether male or female, who labors and works within his, the person's, ground or earth such as on a specific plot of land” “shall be satisfied” which means “will exist as filled with plenty, satiated and sufficed” “with bread” or “with grain, wheat or food”. Solomon shared how the person who works and labors within their fields will be satiated with grain or food from them.
The verse continues, “but he that follows vain persons is void of understanding.” Solomon added the words, “but he that follows” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the person whether male or female who pursues, chases, attends closely to and runs after” “vain persons” which means “empty and worthless people whether male or female” “is void of understanding” or “exists as lacking, destitute and failing pertaining to the inner man, mind, heart, knowledge, reflection, inclination and determination”. Solomon said the person who pursues empty and worthless people is lacking in knowledge and inclination.
When we meditate upon Solomon's words in this verse, we discover the advantage an industrious person has over those who chase after empty people. Satisfaction comes from working, and running after worthless ideas not only causes a person to be without knowledge and in lack as well. God wants us to work, and whatever field He has us in, we are to labor as unto Him and not unto men. (See Colossians 3:23) God labored in His field when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins, and when we yield our lives Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a desire to labor in His field and to avoid “vain” people.
Next time Solomon says, “the wicked desires the net of evil men”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
