The Wise in Heart - Proverbs 10:8

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot”, and in chapter ten and verse eight of Proverbs Solomon said, “the wise in heart will receive commandments” where we read,

The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.

The verse begins, “the wise in heart will receive commandments: Solomon began with the words, “the wise in heart” or “the skillful, shrewd, crafty, cunning, wily and subtle within their soul, mind, will, desires, conscience and seat of emotions and affections” will receive commandments which means “shall fetch, lay hold of, seize, acquire and take away ordinance, precept and code of wisdom”. Solomon shared how people who are skillful and shrewd lay hold of precepts and codes of wisdom.

The verse continues, “but a prating fool shall fall.” Solomon added the words, “but a prating fool” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover a licentious, mocking and quarrelsome person who despises wisdom” “shall fall” which means “will thrust away, cast aside and be thrown down”. Solomon said a person who is a babbling, mocking and quarrelsome will be cast aside and thrown down.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon the difference between a person who is “wise” in their souls, and those who are babbling people who despise wisdom. God wants us to have His “wisdom” (See James 1:5), and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins, He made the way for us to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and to receive His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and empower us to life according to that truth. (See John 16:13 and Acts 1:8) God loves us, and He employed the words of Solomon to encourage us to submit to Him and be “wise”.

Next time Solomon says, “he that walks uprightly walks surely”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
