The Lips of the Righteous - Proverbs 10:32

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “The mouth of the just brings forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out”, and in chapter ten and verse thirty-two of Proverbs Solomon said, “the lips of the righteous know what is acceptable” where we read,

The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaks frowardness.

The verse begins, “The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: Solomon began with the words, “the lips of the righteous” or “the physical lips used for speaking belonging to the just, lawful and correct” know what is acceptable which means “perceive, recognize, acknowledge and are acquainted with that which exists as pleasurable, delightful and of goodwill”. Solomon shared how the “lips” used for speaking of people who are lawful and correct are aware of what is delightful and of goodwill.

The verse goes on to say, “but the mouth of the wicked speaks frowardness.” Solomon continued with the words, “but the mouth” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking” “of the wicked” which means “belonging to people who are criminal, guilty of crime, evil and hostile to God” “speaks frowardness” or “utters, declares, proclaims and talks about perverse and fraudulent things”. Solomon shared about the speaking of the “mouths” of people who talk in perverse ways because they are evil and hostile to God.

When we think through Solomon's words in this verse, we see how he contrasted the speech of people who are “righteous” and people who are “wicked”. The true heart of a person is revealed by what they say. (See Matthew 12:34) God knows we have sinful hearts, and He wants to change them. He loves us, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for every sin we have ever committed - even those spoken with our “mouths”. When we yield to Jesus, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and cha nge our hearts to be like His. Then we shall use our “lips and mouths” to glorify Him in an “acceptable” and delightful way.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see Solomon say, “a false balance is abomination to the LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
