The Mouth of the Just - Proverbs 10:31

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth”, and in chapter ten and verse thirty-one of Proverbs Solomon said, “the mouth of the just brings forth wisdom” where we read,

The mouth of the just brings forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.

The verse begins, “The mouth of the just brings forth wisdom: Solomon began with the words, “the mouth of the just” or “the orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking belonging to people who are righteous, correct and lawful” brings forth wisdom which means “germinates, flourishes and increases skill, shrewdness and prudence”. Solomon shared how people who are righteous and lawful use their “mouths” to produce skill and prudence.

The verse continues, “but the froward tongue shall be cut out.” Solomon added the words, “but the froward tongue” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the perverse and fraudulent wedge in the mouth used for tasting and speaking” “shall be cut out” which means “will be hewn off, destroyed and permitted to perish”. Solomon said the “tongue” of people who use it fraudulently and with perversity will be destroyed.

When we meditate upon Solomon's words in this verse, we learn how there is a contrast to the speech of people who are righteous and the speech of perverse and deceptive people. Jesus said, “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (See Matthew 12:34), and the true character of a person is revealed by the way they speak. God wants us to use our speech in accordance with His ways, and when we surrender our lives to His Son Jesus who came into the world to die on the cross for our sins, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and guide us into all truth by His Holy Spirit so we use our “mouths and tongues” in a manner that is pleasing to Him. Let us give praise, honor and glory to Jehovah God and His Son Jesus for not only guiding our speech, but also filling us with His Spirit so that we speak in a “just” way.

Next time Solomon said, “the lips of the righteous know what is acceptable”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
