The Mouth of a Righteous Man - Proverbs 10:11

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that winks with the eye causes sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall”, and in chapter ten and verse eleven of Proverbs Solomon said, “the mouth of a righteous man is a well of life” where we read,

The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

The verse begins, “The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: Solomon began with the words, “the mouth of a righteous man” or “the orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking belonging to a just, right, correct and lawful person whether male or female” is a well of life which means “exists as a spring, fountain or source of active and lively joy and purification”. Solomon shared how the “mouth” of a person who is just and lawful exists as joyous and pure.

The verse goes on to say, “but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.” Solomon continued with the words, “but violence” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover wrong, cruelty and injustice” “covers the mouth” which means “conceals and hides the orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking” “of the wicked” or “belonging to the person who is criminal, guilty of crime and hostile to God”. Solomon said the “mouths” of people who are cruel and wrong conceals wicked intentions.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how there is a difference between the “mouths” of people who are just and lawful and those who are evil and hostile to God. The first uses their speech like a spring of joyous living, but the second conceals wrong and cruelty committed by people who are criminal and hostile to God. God wants us to use our talking for His honor and glory, and when we surrender our lives to His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth to use our “mouths” in joyous living before Him and others.

Next time Solomon says, “hatred stirs up strifes”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
