In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “The blessing of the LORD, it makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it”, and in chapter ten and verse twenty-three of Proverbs Solomon said, “it is as sport to a fool to do mischief” where we read,
It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding has wisdom.
The verse begins, “It is as sport to a fool to do mischief:” Solomon began with the words, “it is as sport to a fool” or “laughing, mocking and deriding exist similar and in likeness to a dullard, silly, arrogant and stupid fellow” “to do mischief” which means “to make, perform and produce lewdness, evil and a heinous crime”. Solomon shared how people who commit lewd and heinous crimes consider their activities a laughing, mocking and deriding matter.
The verse goes on to say, “but a man of understanding has wisdom.” Solomon continued with the words, “but a man of understanding” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover a knowledgeable, perceptive and intelligent person whether male or female”,“has wisdom” which means “holds, owns and possesses skill, shrewdness and prudence”. Solomon said a person who has knowledge and perception possesses skill and prudence as well.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how people who are arrogant and silly perform evil acts in a mocking and deriding manner. They laugh at their heinous ventures and believe they are justified in their wicked activities. A person who has knowledge and perception to the ways of God possesses skill and prudence from Him. God loves us, and He wants us to commit lawful and righteous acts. He sent His Son Jesus not only to demonstrate what love looks like, but also to give His life on the cross for the sins of the world. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His “understanding and wisdom” so we avoid committing heinous acts with a mocking and arrogant spirit that is opposed to Him.
Next time Solomon says, “the fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
