Wise Son Glad Father - Proverbs 10:1

In the book of Proverbs Solomon gave wise instruction to his son, and in chapter ten of Proverbs Solomon began to share many wise and contrasting proverbs that we may employ into our lives. In chapter ten and verse one Solomon said, “a wise son makes a glad father” where we read,

The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father:

but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

The verse begins, “The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father: Solomon began with the words, “the proverbs” or “the proverbial sayings, aphorisms, similitudes and parables” of Solomon which means “belonging to Solomon whose name means peace and was the son of David by Bathsheba and third king of Israel”. “A wise son” or “a skillful, shrewd, subtle and prudent male offspring and progeny” “makes a glad father” which means “causes his primary male progenitor and ancestor to rejoice, be gladdened and cheerful”. Solomon shared how a male offspring who is skillful and shrewd caused his “father” to be joyful and glad.

The verse goes on to say, “but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.” Solomon continued with the words, “but a foolish son” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover a stupid, dullard, simpleton and arrogant male offspring and progeny” “is the heaviness” which means “exists as the grief, sorrow and depression” “of his mother” or “belonging to his immediate female progenitor and ancestor”. Solomon shared how the male offspring who exists as stupid and arrogant exists as grief and sorrow to his “mother”.

When we meditate upon Solomon's words in this verse, we see the contrast between a “son” who is “foolish”, and the “son” who is “wise”. When a person is skillful and prudent, their father rejoices over them, however, if a person is as a simpleton and arrogant, they become grievous to their “mother”. Many children who act in a “wise” manner become a joy to their parents, but if children rebel and become arrogant in their ways, sorrow fills their parents' hearts. God knew the effects of sin would be burdensome not only to the person who commits it, but also to those who are around them – especially if they are the parents. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross so everyone who believes and trusts in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” may be forgiven of their sins, inherit everlasting life and be given the power to resist temptation and and to continually be a joy to their parents.

Next time Solomon says, “treasures of wickedness profit nothing”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
